The only lavender garden in Japan equipped with a chair lift

Rows of orange, yellow, red, and white, and large swaths of purple cover the mountain face with color. Near the top, the flowers spell out “Nakafurano” in Japanese. This slope becomes a ski resort in winter, hence the chair lift going up beside the flower fields. Only in Nakafurano can you experience the view of lavender fields while enjoying a gentle ride on a lift.

Choei Lavender Park and Hokusei Ski Area

This hillside park is the symbol of Nakafurano. A park for all seasons, it blooms with colorful flowers in summer, and becomes a slope for skiers and snowboarders in winter. From the top of Hokusei-yama, you can enjoy a marvelous view of the Tokachidake mountains.

Feel the fragrance as you pick the flowers

At one garden in the town, you can even try picking the lavenders. The garden’s owners are a couple whose love for the flowers made them move into the town. They’ll happily tell you all about lavenders, and show you which species are the most fragrant by rubbing the buds on your palms.

Nanaka-no-Hanabatake

A sunny garden with a slope that blooms with organically-grown lavenders. You can try picking the lavenders then take them home to make your own dried flower decorations or extract the lavender oil.

Original lavender items and soft cream

Most lavender gardens in town have shops that sell various original lavender items. Besides being a fragrant flower, lavender is also a versatile herb that can be made into a moisturizing cream or insect repellent. A handy item to have is the lavender oil; you can enjoy the refreshing fragrance anywhere you go with just few drops on your hanky or pillow.

A hill with a vast 6-hectare field of lavenders and other red and yellow annual plants. There is also a cafe restaurant and a wedding photo service.

Pension Raclette

A lodge where you can meet animals like donkeys, ponies, and Dosanko horses. You can also enjoy the traditional Swiss cheese called raclette.
