Cross-country skiing across the fields of snow
The powder snow in Nakafurano and the surrounding areas has been renowned by skiers and snowboarders in Japan and all over the world for its quality. The nearby mountains are also popular back country playgrounds for experts. For winter sport beginners, a safe and easy way to enjoy the great winter outdoors is through cross-country skiing. You can either join a guided tour, or rent the equipment from a lodging facility and try it out on your own.
In cross-country skiing, you basically move across the snow one step at a time, like walking with a glide. The base of the skis are covered with a wax, which provides grip for easier uphill climbs, and prevents you from sliding too fast downhill. As you gently move across the quiet snow fields, you’ll even have time to admire the sparkling branches of the frost-covered trees.
Enjoying a bird’s eye view with powered paragliding
Another winter outdoor activity that even complete beginners can try is powered paragliding, and Nakafurano is one of the few places in Hokkaido that offers it. Since it is powered with a motor, you can take off even from level ground. The Furano area is also known for its stable air currents, making it a safe and suitable place for paragliding.
As the motor speeds up, you’ll feel the sky get closer as your body rises into the air. The clear winter air lets you see blue skies all around. As you go even higher, the cold wind on your face may make your cheeks numb with cold, but you’ll be too amazed to notice, as you’ll be fascinated with the view of the snow-covered forests and the Tokachidake mountain range from above.
